Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries
TBIs occur when a person experiences a “bump, blow, or jolt to the head that disrupts the normal function of the brain.” There are various types of TBIs, including:
- Concussion: A concussion is a mild form of a TBI and occurs when a person receives a blow to the head or moves suddenly, such as they would in a car accident. Concussions can cause confusion and problems with concentration. The effects of a concussion can be more severe if a person sustains more than one concussion over a period of time.
- Contusion: A brain contusion is a severe form of a TBI. Brain contusions are a large bruises, or bleeding, on the brain. They may need to be removed surgically and the long-term effects depend on the contusions’ size, placement, and how long it bleeds.
- Penetrating: A penetrating TBI occurs when an object actually penetrates the brain. In addition to the foreign object entering the brain, it is common for pieces of hair, skin, and bone to penetrate the brain as well. Should an individual survive a penetrating brain injury, the long-term effects are generally severe and repeated brain surgeries may be necessary.
- Anoxic: An anoxic brain injury occurs when the brain is deprived of air. With just a few minutes of air deprivation, the brain’s cells begin to die. Long-term effects vary depending on how long the brain goes without oxygen. Common causes of anoxic brain injuries include near drowning, choking, suffocation, carbon monoxide poisoning, stroke, and cardiac arrest.
